Joe Jacobson described relegation back to League Two with Shrewsbury as a "devastating blow".
Cardiff-born Jacobson, who was named Shrewsbury Town Supporters’ Player of the Season on Tuesday, was part of the Shrews side whose fate was sealed following a nightmare run of form this year.
Not even left-back Jacobson’s four-goal haul this season was enough to save a side who have been in free fall in 2014.
He said: "We thought we had enough quality to stay up but it proved too much in the end.
"All the players are gutted. We survived last season but things have conspired us against us this time around.
"It’s devastating blow for myself and everyone connected with the club."
Jacobson’s future is now up in the air after a three-year spell at Shrewsbury.
The 27-year-old is out of contract this summer but he is open to extending his stay at Greenhous Meadow.
"We are due to all sit down and discuss the way forward," he said. "I love playing for Shrewsbury. I’ve also worn the captain’s armband and that has been a real honour. We will just have to see what the future holds.
