MAL have won the Maccabi League treble after landing the Barratts Sunday League title, playoff trophy and Twenty20 competitions.
October 23, 2008 09:47As the season draws to a close it is time to focus on the players and teams who caught the eye on the field of play.
MAL and South Manchester Maccabi had memorable campaigns, despite the bad weather doing its best to ruin the programme.
MAL won the Maccabi League treble after landing the Barratts Sunday League title, playoff trophy and Twenty20 competitions.
They went into the season unbeaten in all competitive cricket and have remained unbeaten in all Sunday cricket since June.
Skipper Gavriel Lebens said: "I'm proud of the team's efforts, we've had a great spirit and backed up some really fine displays in all departments."
All-rounder Richie Young was the team's star man. He hit 552 runs, including one century and three half centuries, at an average of 42.67. He also claimed 24 wickets at an average of 18. Mark Landau, Tony Wise and Charlie Sherrard also caught the eye.
South Manchester were pipped at the post as they attempted to replicate MAL's achievements. Richard Blackston's Bury & Whitefield won the NJCL Cup after South hand clinched the league title and Twenty20.
London Maccabi Vale missed out on the Middlesex Sunday League title. Jon Galloway's troops lost just once but lost three matches to the rain which forced them to finish third, below champions UCS Old Boys and Stanmore. Rivals Belmont & Edgware were one of four scalps along the way.
LMV team won its first match in the Evening Standard Trophy before succumbing to losing finalists Sunbury.
Adam Brand topped Vale's averages with 58.71 featuring two centuries and one 50 while opener Paul Durban was the club's top run-scorer with 429 runs, including four half centuries. He averaged 42.90.
Neil Lederman was the top wicket-taker with 21 victims, with younger brother Ben holding the best average of 9.93. Fast bowler Ryan Kangisser impressed with the ball
The departure of key players, including Herschel Gutman, hit Belmont & Edgware hard. He was replaced by Australian batsman Bronson Ritterman. Highlights of the season were a Ritterman league hat-trick and 144 by Simon Durban. Opening bowler Saul Weitzman was their star performer.
Evergreen bowler Norman Marine helped Old Chomleans claim their third consecutive promotion in Saturday cricket. Marine, who also played for Casual Nomads, took 22 wickets.
Team GB Maccabiah manager Nigel Rothband hit 93 in his final season with Chorleywood. He also played a lead role for Hertfordshire Over 50s.
