Harry Redknapp said that he would have to think long and hard if approached by the FA to succeed Fabio Capello.
Redknapp said: "I would like to see England have an English manager. There are not many obvious candidates but we've gone down the foreign route. Sven Goran Eriksson did not exactly set us alight, and if Fabio Capello can't make a success of it, then it's quite frightening really."
But Redknapp, touted as a frontrunner for the role when the Italian leaves after Euro 2012, insisted that he would miss day-to-day club management.
"To see players once every two months would be difficult. And then you have the press. They'll turn you into something like a cabbage. Who knows what they would turn me into."
Speaking at the One to One Children's Fund breakfast in London this week, Redknapp questioned the determination of youngsters to make it in the game. He said: "Maybe the hunger is not there now. Some of them just want a contract and a fancy car and think that is it."
