"This was the game of the season." That is how England FC B manager Cliff Corney described the seven-goal thriller against local rivals Aviv City on Saturday night.
Early on it appeared that one goal could settle a match in which both teams started with caution, however England B started to get into their groove and broke the deadlock after 25 minutes.
Corney's troops scored twice in quick success, the second an outrageous 30-yard effort by Kfir. By half-time, England led 3-0.
Many thought damage limitation would be Aviv's best bet in the second half, but to their credit, the took the game to England, inspired by some inspirational words from their management.
Aviv came out fighting and within the space of 20 second-half minutes they had managed to score three goals to make it all level.
England regained their momentum and scored the winner 10 minutes of time when Omri Hamama converted.
Aviv pushed and pushed for the equaliser but England B defended bravely and were able to hold out.
Jerusalem 3 Modiin 1
Jerusalem continued their fine run of form on Saturday night, beating Modiin 3-1 on a cool night in the capital. But the scoreline tells only half the story.
With only 20 minutes remaining, Jerusalem were trailing 1-0 and looking certain to drop their first points at home this season, when the irrepressible Lolu Hibbert fired home his eighth of the season. It was a glorious goal from the edge of the area assisted by the returning Eli Warner.
Earlier in the half, Modiin, who had been the better team up to this point, had taken the lead courtesy of a deflected shot from Chaim Finn.
The visitors were denied by the woodwork and some quite phenomenal keeping by the effervescent Francisco Salgado had kept the scores level at the break.
Jerusalem had suffered an early setback losing captain Daniel Kosky to a calf strain and took a while to settle.
Conceding the goal in the 50th minute was the wake-up call they needed and despite the unfaltering passion and commitment of the opposition, with time running out, Hibbert equalised.
Knowing that only a win would keep their title push on track, manager Richard Pater orchestrated what was to be a relentless and ultimately devastating attack on the Modiin goal. Fearlessly adapting his side to the changing flow of the game, he pinned Modiin further and further back, until the lethal Moishe Lewis saw the gap he had been working to generate all game and scored his 13th of the season.
Ten minutes to go and it was Jerusalem asking all the questions, and (in somewhat typical Israeli style,) Modiin didn't have the answers. While still reeling from the goal and trying to buoy themselves for a final push Modiin conceded again, the defeat confirmed by a goal from Mexican marvel Jose 'Misa' Misael Garcia Guarneros.
With five games to go, Jerusalem are now up to second in the table and have a game in hand over Raanana who are five points clear.
