Southgate moved to within one point of top spot in the Maccabi Sunday League, following an 86-run win over Casual Nomads.
A low-scoring contest saw Smokler and Morris make a fluent start until Nomads’ young left-arm spinner, Peter Sulzbachern, changed the game.
Turning the ball in both directions, he accounted for the last five wickets in quick succession as Southgate were dismissed for 150.
Nomads’ reply started in disastrous fashion with skipper Richard Ferrer recklessly run out. This set the tone for the innings as the top five batsmen had departed to Rob Apple (3-22) and Ray Bean with the score on 39. Dov Katzel ripped out the lower order finishing with figures of 5-9 as Nomads were dismissed for a paultry 64.
Team GB’s junior cricket team won their latest warm-up match ahead of the Maccabiah. Joseph Greenwall-Cohen (89) top-scored as GB amassed 189. The innings showed great maturity from the 15-year-old who is the youngest player in the squad.
Finchley were all out for 159 with Steven Allweis taking 4-32. Seb Schusman, Andrew Greenwall-Cohen and Jake Reza grabbed two apiece. Radlett and London Maccabi Vale starlet Daniel Cohen was pick of the bowlers with his six overs costing just four runs.
There were wins for Bury & Whitefield, South Manchester Maccabi and Manchester Maccabi in the Northern Jewish Cricket League. A run-a-ball 71 from Zevi Saunders helped Bury reach 199-9 against Leeds who fell 23 runs short despite 63 from Daniel Goldsbrough. Mark Blackston bowled five consecutive maidens.
South Manchester eased past Salford by nine wickets. Restricted to 120-5, Gideon Sacofsky (39) top-scored for Salford. Akiva Lieberman (55) and Harry Rosenblum (43) saw South home in 19 overs.
Manchester won a thriller against Sedgley after successfully defending 100. Josh Bomztyk (6-29) was the chief tormentor for Salford but Tony Gellman (4-7) struck back as Sedgley were rolled for 96.
Belmont & Edgware (139) lost a friendly against Finchley by 26 runs. Richie Wienburg (3-31), Stuart Davis (3-21) and newcomer Adam Lucas (3-37) kept Finchley in check but only Simon Durban threatened with the bat.
An unbeaten 82 from Jason Redwood steered Downsiders (129-4) to a six-wicket victory over Godalming. Robert Silverstone took 3-22.
An all-round display from teenager Olly Jenne helped MAL back to winning ways against Woodford Green. Jenne (52), Rafi Kon (35) and Elliot Unsdorfer (33) took them to 235-7. Jenne continued his good work with the ball, taking 4-20 to leave Avi Gelley (3-20) to mop up the tail in a 96-run win. Josh Gertner was outstanding in the field.
