Team GB’s rugby team had a successful warm-up game against Finchley, running out comfortable 48-5 winners.
Playing together for the first time since the squad was finalised, the coaching team was happy with the overall performance, although head coach Simon Culley felt that there was still a lot of work to do before the Games. He took a lot of positives from the match and was impressed by the way the team gelled and followed his game plan.
The team was led by London Welsh’s Aaron Liffchak who turned in an excellent performance as did Sam Katz, Ben Allin, Jon Feinberg and Tabard’s Jake Norman who, although playing out of position on the wing, scored two tries in the first half and then completed an unusual hat-trick by playing and scoring for Finchley, who were a man short, in the second half.
The team’s seven tries were scored by Sam Katz, Mike Aminzade, Ben Allin, David Todd, Ben Chamberlain and Norman (2). London Welsh’s Katz converted five and also scored a drop goal. David Todd has joined the squad and will be making the trip to Israel.
