South Manchester recorded their first win of the season with a 4-1 victory over old nemesis, Mace.
South started brightly and took the lead through Adam Lavin, continuing his good start to the season. Chances came and went before Toby Levy struck the ball home from 18 yards to double South's lead.
Lavin added to his spreadsheet with a good finish with the outside of his boot - his start to the season comparable to Chelsea talisman Diego Costa, however spectators can see this lad for free!
South were slow to come out in the second half. The Mace midfield got a hold of the game and started to create chances themselves. South keeper Alex Davies pulled off some good saves to keep the margin at three.
Midway through the second half, Mace got one back from a corner. Despite Mark Stewart's claims for a foul, a nervy ending was to follow, especially given the fact that South have thrown away a two-goal lead twice already this season.
However, this week it wasn't to be. Substitute David Flax came on to set up Ben Peppi, who calmly rounded the keeper to slot home.
Managers Paul Kirkham and Neil Collins were delighted with the win. Collins said: "We have worked hard the last few weeks, both on the training pitch and in shul.
"We look forward to fasting on Saturday and Flixton on Sunday.
"Another positive was seeing Ian Tussie start again. I spoke with Ric Blank on Saturday (after shabbos) and we were excited to welcome him on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, he didn't show; but Ian is a new man this year and he's going from strength to strength."
Tussie responded: "I love this time of year. To be a Jew playing amateur football during the simcha-season sends a shiva down my spine.
"Our start to the season has been a little inauspicious but yesterday we answered our critics and got the win we had prayed for over Rosh Hashanah. I never check the league table until Shemini Atzeret and then once again during Lag B’Omer and I will stick to my word this season but just to know we have a ‘1’ under the ‘W’ column at last will make me fast more easily this weekend."
