AFC Flixton landed a psychological blow over rivals Manchester Maccabi 1st after Rob Jacobs grabbed the winner in the Peter Morrison Trophy.

Jacobs’ scrambled home in the 20th minute to set up quarter-final clash with FC Team B following the all-Manchester affair.

In the first of potentially four matches this season between the two Account Premier League sides, Flixton earned the bragging rights.

The pair are still yet to meet in the league while they will lock horns in the Handicup final. There is also a real chance they could go head-to-head in the Kings Cup.

Joint Flixton boss Stuart Delmonte said: “It was a dire game where the conditions played its part. But it’s all about winning in cup competitions and you won’t get more ugly than this.

"Even the goal we scored was a real scramble. It was a game to forget. Adam Gilman was the man-of-the-match but it was hard to pick out any stand-out performers.

"The main aim was to earn the bragging rights over Manchester Maccabi 1st. We expect further fierce battles with them to come."

In a fame of few chances, Manchester Maccabi 1st were unable to break down a resolute and organised Flixton side following Jacobs' strike.

Maccabi chief Martin Simons said: "We are disappointed to bow out but we know there’s a lot more to play for yet.

"There is little between the two sides. It will be the same in the league. The league will go right down to the wire."
