Braces from Simon Lester and Paul Clayton inspired Maccabi Manchester 2nd to an impressive 5-2 victory at Manchester Nexus.
After a disappointing cup exit last weekend, Maccabi returned to league action for a game that started frantically, with both teams having early chances to take the lead.
Maccabi then settled into their rhythm and began dominating the game with their fast paced passing game. For all their early possession though it was Nexus who carved out the first chance. A long ball down the line fell to the Nexus striker who shot from 15 yards out, only to see his shot saved by Maccabi keeper Harris Kersh.
The scare seemed to spark Maccabi into life and a brilliant passing move starting from the back resulted in Jason Hamburger crossing for Simon Lester, whose first attempt was saved by the goalkeeper before Lester tucked away the rebound.
Maccabi had chances to double their league before half time but couldn't convert.
Five minutes into the second half and all of Maccabi's good work was undone by overplaying in the middle of the park. Nexus broke forward and after a scramble in the area the Nexus forward pounced on the loose ball to bring the game level.
The goal did not shake Maccabi's confidence though and they were straight on the attack from the kick-off with Adam Herman and Jason Hamburger causing havoc on either wing.
Maccabi regained the lead through a piece of brilliance from striker Lester. In what turned out to be his last act of the game, Lester received the ball 20 yards from goal, chipped the ball with his first touch and rifled the ball into the top corner with his second. Surely a goal of the season contender.
Leading for the second time, Maccabi were quick to kill off the game. Adam Herman's inswinging corner was met at the back post by the head of left-back Paul Clayton to put Maccabi two clear.
Then moments later Jason Hamburger's persistence down the right wing finally paid off when he rounded the Nexus goalkeeper to put the game out of reach.
Nexus did pull on back following some sloppy Maccabi defending, before left-back Clayton twisted and turned before firing a shot that was too hot to handle for the Nexus keeper. Clayton, a seasoned defensively-minded player, fancies himself as a bit of target man and he did is case no harm here.
All in all a great morning for Maccabi who made it back to back wins in the league.
