Division Three leaders Glenthorne United A march ominously towards the title after putting Team JLGB to the sword with a 5-0 success.
Here is how JLGB manager Rob Silver saw it.
JLGB gave as good as they got today, against a very impressive Glenthorne side.
Glenthorne are by far the best team we have come up against this season and I am sure they will go on to win the division. Good luck to them.
JLGB started brightly and the battling Nicky Stone, who put in an excellent performance, put a great early cross in. Rob Silverman beat his man and put a firm header just wide of the target. If anything, Silverman connected to well.
Glenthorne settled quickly and were in complete control, passing the ball around admirably. It was not long before Glenthorne were 1-0 up.
Soon it was two but JLGBs heads didnt drop and kept plugging at it.
Jonny Reid was unfortunate to give away a penalty for what seemed like an unintentional trip in the box, but he can count himself lucky not to have been booked for it.
Rob Levene, Team JLGBs man of match, pulled off the second best save I have seen in Jewish football (the best occured later in the same match), diving low to his right to deny the penalty taker. There was nothing wrong with the prenalty, hit firm, low and heading for the corner. A clear nomination for save of the week.
Glenthorne grabbed a third on the stroke of half time.
The second half saw JLGB come into the game more and create some chances. Barry Green navigated his way through four challenges and was through on goal, but couldn't get the power into his shot.
Mike Marks beat a couple of men on the left and put a great ball over which Nicky Stone could not quite get to at the far past.
Some great play from James Wright and Nicky Stone gave Matt West a one-on-one, but he shot straight at the keeper.
In between all of which, Glenthorne scored again to make it 4-0.
Then, a second nomination for save of the week. A quite incredibale save from Levene, the Glenthorne player had an open goal from two yards out, he took his time, but too long, as Levene put in an incredible effort to get from one side of the gaol to the other and dived in front of the shot. Never seen anything like it!
It would probably a bit much to nominate Rob Levene for team of the week considering we conceded five, but none of them were down to Rob. Rob made a swathe of great saves, not least the two already mentioned. Fair to say the scoreline would have doubled had it not been for this inspired performance.
Glenthorne then scored a fifth!
Barry Green playing at centre back due to a number of missing defenders for JLGB today, put in a stirling shift with some fantasticly timed sliding tackles throughout the game.
JLGB went down to 10 men for the final 20 minutes and nine for the final five minutes as two players had to leave the game early due to other comitments but we managed to avoid conceding during this period.
It was a brave perfomance against a superior side, but JLGB were much better in the second half and showed signs of actually being able to play football! JLGB will be looking to see the season out and hope to return a much stronger force next season, whichever division we find ourselves in.
Dan Lipman, Paul Biller, John Lessem, Dan Shafron and Dave Blackman were the marksmen for the Thornes.
