James Bongart maintained top form with gold at the British Athletics League meeting in Gateshead.

Having recently taken the Essex under-20 title, Bongart, 17, showed that he is one of the country’s top young field event athletes with a personal best throw of 54.15m in the javelin.

The performance saw the Woodford Green and Essex competitor climb to 15th in the UK under-20 rankings.

Richard Goodman was a clear victor in the Ickenham 5 Mile Race, recording 24:50, six seconds short of the record for the fast, flat course.
