A trio of talented teenage Jewish musicians will be joined by world-renowned classical pianist Sam Haywood, jazz performer Cody Lee and magician Nathan Penlington at a charity concert on Sunday in aid of St John’s Hospice.
The young Jewish players, called the Sharp Trio, are three siblings who have been playing together for over a decade.
Seventeen-year-old Anoushka Sharp plays the cello as her main instrument, her 15-year-old brother Amos and 13-year-old sister Aviva play the violin. Anoushka and Amos were winners of Emunah Young Musician of the Year, an annual award celebrating extraordinary musical talent, while Aviva has been a finalist.
Sunday's concert will see the full premieres of Anoushka's piano trio and cello sonata.
The young musician and composer came to prominence as a winner of the Royal Opera House Fanfare Competition. Aged 14, she wrote her first cello concerto dedicated to the cellist Steven Isserlis, before performing the piece with the Docklands Sinfonia orchestra in May 2014.
At Sunday's concert, which is presented by the Rotary Club of St Marylebone and takes place at the American School in St John's Wood, north-west London, the trio will be playing a selection of their own music as well as other works, including Tchaikovsky’s Danse Des Mirlitons from the Nutcracker.
“The piano trio is a fiery, romantic G minor storm, interspersed with beautiful melodies and vivid chord progressions. Dedicated to my brother, Amos Sharp, it cries out for passionate players,” said Anoushka. “The concert will be the first-ever performance of all three movements. The cello sonata is a piece of philosophy, with a quiet, internal beginning and a questioning, unsettling ending."
