August 11, 2022 15:45Now Love Island has wrapped for the year, it is time for us to live out our own holiday romances after watching so many play out in real time on our TV screens. Holiday flings are the best, and they take ‘no strings attached’ to a whole new level.
The one at the airport
If you are single and travelling alone then you can start looking for potential romance at the airport. Nothing quite compares to the tension on finding yourself on a plane with the hot guy who is similarly travelling solo.
Why are they travelling alone? Are they going to meet their girlfriend? A friend of mine recently had a nightmare journey in which her connecting flight had been cancelled and then she met this guy on the layover.
They hit it off and bonded over the chaos, but they never exchanged numbers and to this day we only know him as no surname Olly. And I guess she’ll always wonder what if.
The not-so one night wonder
You lose your friends on a night out in Thailand on Koh Pi Pi Island but whilst you’re looking for your girls, meet a guy and end up having some fun.
Obviously, you assume you’ll never see him again and say your goodbyes. But then he pops up in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Ko Tao.
So, your dreams of island hopping and man-hopping becomes virtually impossible as you’ve essentially got yourself a holiday husband. Three years later and he still watches all your Instagram stories.
The local one
You don’t speak the same language, but it doesn’t matter because you’re being spontaneous, and he knows the best spot in town to set the romantic scene you see in every romcom movie. We’re talking a sunset beach walk that ends up with you both skinny dipping in the sea.
You meet his entire family as they all work in the local restaurant, and it all feels quite hectic. Every couple of months he sends you text messages which only consist of emojis, but your girlfriends agree it’s endearing rather than creepy because he’s the cute local still living on the island in Croatia.
The one you meet on the last night
Your sunburn has finally turned to tan, and you are at the peak of your holiday glow up. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone you confidently set your sights on the group of guys who are staying at the same resort as you and your gal pals. You discover that only one of them is single and end the holiday on a high.
From holiday hook ups to thinking you’ve found the love of your life, romance abroad can be anything you want it to be. There is a freedom when you’re away from your hometown that takes your best self to new heights.
The real test is when your return home and you take off your holiday goggles and either cringe at your escapades or, long to see your holiday romance again and arrange to meet up.
