Objections to the BDS bill are spurious

For many years, the Jewish community and its allies have campaigned against the BDS movement. Its motivation in singling out the world's only Jewish state is antisemitic. Its impact in forcing through boycotts of Israeli goods is antisemitic. And its supporters are, overwhelmingly, antisemitic.

At last, a government has decided to act. After a manifesto commitment in 2019, a bill is now before Parliament to bar local councils and other public bodies from boycotting Israel. This is a victory for decency over bigotry.

And yet there are now MPs - on all sides - who, while professing their loathing of antisemitism and opposition to BDS, are picking holes in the drafting of the bill to find ways to justify not supporting the bill.

The objections are spurious. The second reading is a vote in principle. If they have issues with the specifics of the drafting they can be dealt with in committee. Michael Gove, the responsible minister, has repeatedly said he is open to amendments to improve the bill.

The issue is binary. Either you support action against BDS or you do not. Sophistic arguments claiming otherwise fool no one.
