The Lebanese media identified the suspect as Ali Jarrah, and reported that he had confessed to being a Mossad agent. The Lebanese security agencies claimed to have uncovered an Israeli spy ring dating from the 1980s set up to gather information about Lebanese and Syrian targets.

The couple, who had separated a month ago and have children, were both hospitalised at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot where they were described as being in a serious condition.

Judge Aharon Golds set Mr Gaydamak's bail at US$2.5 million (£1.5m).
