The careers counsellor and college lecturer has volunteered at the Employment Resource Centre in East Finchley for just over two years. She has also volunteered for Jewish Care
I chose to volunteer because I like to contribute to the community in a practical manner. I have chosen this charity because it ties in with what I do professionally and I feel I can best utilise my knowledge, skills and experience in this way.
I meet clients who are looking to gain employment or are undergoing career transitions. I assess their needs, advise on their job search documentation and methodology, and provide support for whatever issues may be effecting their job search. Like all the volunteers, I am involved in development of the service so we have lots of training sessions and meetings.
It is very rewarding to help people back into employment because not only is a job important for financial security but it can also be a crucial aspect of one's identity. I enjoy working with a diverse group of clients - differing ages and work histories, a variety of nationalities and educational backgrounds. People who have been made redundant, workers remaining in the workforce past the traditional retirement age, voluntary midlife career-changers and new graduates are just some of the clients who use our facilities.
Every time a client lets me know that they have found a job!
