My sedra was about the spies who were sent into Israel. I was told that I performed very well. Even though the shul was packed, I was not very nervous. Participants in the service included Board of Deputies president Henry Grunwald, Judge Graham Arran, Lord Carlile, the government's senior adviser on terror laws, and Lord Clinton-Davis. Guests also included a number of non-Jews who had never been to a synagogue before. Katie Sugarman, a TV newsreader, said that the service was not what she had expected. She enjoyed the warmth of the atmosphere, the tuneful melodies, the informality and the fact that everybody was so welcoming.
