A Jewish student was smiling after his University Challenge team scored a comprehensive victory to advance to the next round of the BBC contest.
Jonathan Metzer was part of the Worcester College, Oxford, team which was one of four losing first round sides with the best score, qualifying for a play-off.
The 19-year-old, from Willesden Green, north-west London, and his team returned last week to beat St Andrews University to progress in the quiz.
He correctly answered questions about the Abbey Road Studios and the 2010 coalition agreement.
The Oxford team bettered their first-round score of 180, gaining 250 points to St Andrews’ 110.
Mr Metzer, a Bnei Akiva member, is currently in his second year at Oxford where he is studying Classics.
He and his team will now compete for a place in the quarter finals and the hope is to achieve the college’s first series win.
Former contestants include Conservative MP Sir Malcolm Rifkind and JC columnist David Aaronovitch.
