How Jewish is Dave Myers?

TV foodies the Hairy Bikers, comprising Dave Myers and Simon King, are back in a new BBC series called The Hairy Bakers. And Myers, for one, looks decidedly Jewish.

For: His name is David Myers. Sounds Jewish, doesn't it? He looks as if he has just stepped out of rabbinical school with his shtetl features and haimishe beard. Myers is from the North-West - a Jewish part of the country - and he loves to bake. If he likes cake, he probably likes coffee too. More tellingly, Myers was quoted in the JC back in April voicing his opposition to the BNP. Everything about him exudes Jewishness.

Against: Myers comes from the distinctly goyische enclave of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, not a place with many bagel bars. Myers rides a very big motorbike - you can't have four-wheel drive when you only have two wheels. Myers and Simon King, his baking and biking companion, first made each other's acquaintance over a plate of free-range pork and jasmine rice. Actually, they cook pork quite a lot - also crab, lobster and the odd langoustine. Oh, and when we asked him whether he was Jewish, Myers said: "No." Yet despite all the evidence, we still have our suspicions .

Verdict: We reckon Dave is only one nicely glazed challah away from shul membership.Until then...
