Jewish life at York University received a boost as students welcomed the opening of the new Hillel Centre on Wednesday.

Despite snowy conditions guests heard from a series of speakers and also lit candles to mark the first night of Chanucah.

The new centre is located in the heart of York’s campus and has a kitchen, lounge area and facilities to hold a communal Friday night dinner.

Peter Bartley, president of York Jewish Society, said: “This is a major progression for the York Jewish community as well as the university in fostering strong faith based relations through such crucial provisions.”
