HSCL Prem Div: London Lions 4 Baldock Town 1
Scintillating is the best way to sum up Lions 4-1 win over newly promoted Division one Champions Baldock Town at Rowley Lane.
In what could arguably be their best performance of the season so far, the football played was easy on the eye and a joy to watch and highlighted just how potentially good this side could become.
With Guy Helman and Adam Stolermans away manager Tony Gold had to reshuffle his pack with captain Rob Glass going back into centre-half, Adam Myeroff switching to left-back, Eddie Manson moving into a more attacking role down the left, Ben Lauffer moving to the right, Nick Goodman playing central, Lee Cash coming back and Shai Revivo moving up from the reserves after some bright performances onto the bench.
It was clear from the start that Baldock Town had come to play but it was the home side that took control of the game. Passing the ball fluently with excellent movement off the ball the Lions had the away side chasing shadows.
Eddie Manson playing in an unfamiliar role in the attacking left hand side of midfield was a constant threat throughout and he was very unlucky to have a goal ruled out for an apparent off-side.
Lions however did open the scoring on 22 minutes with a passage of play that wouldn't have looked out of place in the Barclays Premier league.
Guy Morris was the scorer heading home his second goal in as many weeks past the hapless Baldock Town keeper.
Baldock Town did have their moments but the Lions rear guard held firm with Myeroff playing at left-back having an eye catching game.
Avi Schwarz continued to move the ball with purpose supported tremendously well by Ben Lampert and Danny Castle but it was Nick Goodman who worked tirelessly up front that brought it all together with clever link up play and unselfish running.
Lions scored a deserved second ten minutes before half-time, Ben Lampert scoring his seventh goal in six games showing great composure with a delicate lob.
Baldock Town quite naturally upped the tempo of their game in the second-half and started to get far more involved giving their manager a response he would have wanted.
It was game on 15 minutes into the half after some good Baldock pressure finally paid off with the centre forward pulling off Morris and heading home.
Gold then introduced Cash and Fieldgrass into the wide areas to inject some pace into the game for the final 30 minutes and their impact was felt immediately.
Lee Cash quite clearly is a player who has huge potential to be a fantastic player at this level and perhaps go and play a higher level of football should he so wish, but for some unknown reason the desire to do so just isn't there. Maybe it needs someone of Alex Ferguson's stature to have a quite word which would make the difference but whatever the reasons Sir Alex would have been impressed with his two late goals that sealed a great Lions win.
After another solid display and still unbeaten in the league Gold commented "The lads have been and are working very hard and the results we are getting show this". When asked what the major factor was he replied "No superstars"!
Next weekend is first against second as Lions travel to Met Police in what will surely be a real cracker.
