Ofsted: 'help us track illegal schools'

Public encouraged to blow the whistle on institutions suspected of operating outside the law

articlemain

Ofsted has appealed to the public to help it crack down on illegal schools.

The inspectorate published advice on Monday on how people can report a suspected unregistered school for investigation.

Institutions which teach five or more children for over 18 hours a week are required to register with the Department for Education.

One unregistered primary school in Stamford Hill where only Yiddish was spoken was ordered to close five years ago.

Proprietors of illegal institutions can face fines or six months in jail.

Many teenage boys in Stamford Hill learn in yeshivot but such institutions which teach only a religious curriculum are not classified as schools under the current definition and therefore can operate lawfully.

Early last year, the government announced plans to introduce new measures that would regulate institutions such as yeshivot.
