The first Colin Rosen Inter-School Sports Day event will take place on Sunday
July 12, 2019 14:28Eight London Jewish primaries will be racing for success at a new inter-school sports competition on Sunday.
The event is being staged in tribute to the late Colin Rosen, an athletics enthusiast, and to raise funds for Chai Cancer Care.
There will be races for different year groups across several distances from 60 to 400 metres, a long jump and a contest for throwing a cricket ball.
“The idea for this event came following the death of our father last year,” explaiined Michael Rosen, who has organised it with his brother Neil.
“ He was a very keen athlete and for many years in the 1980s he helped to organise an internagogue athletics competition for the different chedarim across North-West London. This was a very successful event, which only stopped in the 1990s, as the cheder system declined. “
“We thought about what we would like to do in his honour. And the one thing that kept coming back to us was his love of athletics.”
Mr Rosen said the family were “looking forward to a day of enjoyable races, good competition and a worthy winner at the end, who will take home the Colin Rosen Inter-School Sports Day Trophy and £500 to spend on sports equipment for their school. “
Their father managed the team from Belmont Synagogue’s cheder, which emerged victorious numerous occasions.
“We are delighted that this event is also raising money for Chai Cancer Care, a wonderful charity who gave dad, and our whole family, so much support and guidance during his difficult last months,”
Mr Rosen said. “So far we have raised over £19,000 in order to help them with their crucial work.”
