More than 40 warning notices issued by the Department for Education against Charedi independent schools remain active, according to recently released figures.
But the DfE’s latest list shows that no warning notices have been given to Charedi schools so far during 2026.
A warning notice is received by a school when Ofsted has determined that is failing to meet independent schools standards. The notice is withdrawn by the DfE when it is satisfied that the school has met the standards.
According to the DfE, warning notices against five Charedi schools remain listed for 2025; two for 2024 and five for 2023.
But 34 out of 36 warning notices for independent schools listed from 2018 to 2021 relate to Charedi schools – making a total of active 46 notices of Charedi schools from 2018 to the end of September this year.
Schools that receive a notice are required to submit an action plan to the DfE on how they intend to remedy the identified problem.
Some Charedi schools, whose education generally passes muster with the authorities, are only failing to meet the standards because they refuse to teach pupils about same-sex orientation or gender reassingment, arguing that such topics are not appropriate for their schools.
