It's take two for the JSoc Oscars - The Jewish Chronicle

The achievements of the country's most dedicated and enterprising Jewish students will be recognised at a special awards ceremony this week.

Around 150 students from across the country are expected to attend the UJS Student Awards in Camden, north London, on Sunday night.

It will be the second time the awards have taken place. More than 50 students have been nominated for their efforts.

Emma Rickman, UJS events officer, said it was an opportunity to recognise the impact students have on their campuses.

The union is also keen to make the community aware of universities with small but active Jewish societies.

Emma said: "The Developing JSoc Award specifically highlights the growth and achievements of different small and medium-sized JSocs and the ceremony is an opportunity to reward them for their efforts."

There are six awards, each highlighting a different aspect of students' extra-curricular work:

● The UJIA Education Award will be presented to the most innovative Jewish educational programme, with the winner travelling with a UJIA executive team to projects in northern Israel.

● World Jewish Relief's Social Action Award recognises the best community or campus-based volunteering work. WJR chief executive Paul Anticoni will accompany the winner to a project in the former Soviet Union.

● The most effective campus activist will collect the Campaigns Award and with it a trip to an international conference in Washington DC.

● Israel Connect sponsors the Events Award, handed out to the JSoc which organised the year's most innovative event. A weekend on a leaders' course in Europe awaits the winner.

● An entire JSoc committee will be recognised for its work in the past year in the Developing JSoc Award. The category is open to small and medium-sized societies.

● The UJS-backed Alan Senitt Outstanding Contribution Award is reserved for an individual who has had a significant impact on Jewish student life on campus.

The ceremony forms part of the UJS "Big Weekend", which includes a Friday night dinner and career networking event.
