Plans to build a school to house both Hasmonean Boys and Hasmonean Girls Schools have been blocked by Barnet Council on the basis that they may endanger local wildlife.

The plan had been to demolish the current girls’ school on Page Street in Mill Hill and replace it with a building comprising different sections for the boys’ and the girls’ schools.

The new building would have been extended onto Copthall Fields South, considered a site of local importance for nature conservation.

A spokesperson for Barnet Counil told the JC: “At a recent strategic planning committee meeting, members endorsed the officer's recommendations to move refusal on the grounds of several issues, including inappropriate development in the green belt, and loss of public open space.”
