Yaakov Daniel, one of the stars of Israel’s Netflix series Fauda, was a special guest at an international quiz to mark Yom Ha’atzmaut run by a London-based education organisation.
Some 1,700 families from all over the Jewish world tackled questions on Israel in the online quiz staged by Etgar.
The actor asked one of the 24 questions put to contestants in the first round of the challenge before six teams – including three from Britain - progressed to the final.
They had to answer questions on what is Israel’s favourite snack to what was the one programme broadcast by Israel’s first TV channel in its first years.
In the end, the joint winners were Eddie Breuer-Weil and his family from Edgware and Simon Cohen and his family from Israel. Mr Cohen, a British oleh, is co-founder of the Aardvark programme for gap year students in Israel.
Etgar ran the event as an alternative to the quiz on Israel it normally runs for UK Jewish schools on Yom Ha’atzmaut but which it was forced to abandon because of the coronavirus lockdown. A top TV producer David Coleman was drafted in to produce it.
“We were delighted with the participation,” said Etga co-founder Adam Taub, who estimated that more 3,000 were taking part. “We had people from all over North and South America, South Africa and Israel.”
There were contestants from France to Uzbekhistan and one keen Australian who was up in the early hours to take part.
