Election plans get under way

articlemain

Dozens of Jewish candidates are standing for election to regional and national student organisations this month.
They hope to win faith, welfare and education positions on their own student unions, as well as achieving general National Union of Students delegate posts.

More than 1,500 students will attend the NUS annual conference in Gateshead in April next year.

Jewish students have traditionally worked hard to ensure substantial representation at the conference in an attempt to secure favourable motions and an equal footing with other minority groups.

Among those standing is Emily Black, co-president of Durham JSoc, who is hoping to be elected as an NUS delegate during elections in the first week of December.

She is currently a junior student union representative and sits on Durham’s SU council. Her manifesto includes pledges to make the NUS more relevant to Durham students while backing anti-fascist and anti-racist movements.

Harrison Cohen, who two years ago ran for Union of Jewish Students chair, is standing for a number of roles at UCL student union.

Currently the Students of Faith welfare officer and president of the Students of Faith Network, he pledged to “fight against the bureaucracy and political divisions that plague the union” if elected as an arts and humanities rep. He is also hoping to become an NUS delegate.

Also at UCL, Richard Muswell is running for the Governance Committee, which oversees the student union, clubs and societies.
