Clore Shalom still requires improvement

Cross-communal primary has come on in "leaps and bounds" a parent tells Ofsted but inspectors want to see further progress

Clore Shalom, the cross-communal primary in Shenley, Hertfordshire, has made progress since the arrival of Karen Cohen as headteacher earlier this year but still “requires improvement” — the same inspection rating it received two-and-a-half years ago.

The new head and her deputy had “driven rapid improvement”,  worked “relentlessly” to raise expectations and eradicated inadequate teaching, Ofsted reported after its latest visit.

One parent told Ofsted, “The school has come on [in] leaps and bounds”.

But while the management and leadership of the school were now good, the quality of learning and teaching remained “too variable,” inspectors found.

Teachers did “not have consistently high expectations of what pupils can achieve. In too many lessons, work is either too easy or too hard for pupils”. The ablest pupils were not always challenged sufficiently and in some lessons teachers did not check the work of pupils closely enough.

Although maths, reading and writing had improved at the end of the final year in 2017, outcomes in other subjects were “not yet good”.
