The youngest of three Israeli yeshiva students caught smuggling drugs from Israel to Japan has been sentenced.
Japanese prosecutors asked the court to jail Yosef Bandau for 10 years. But he was sentenced to five years and fined four million yen (£30,000).
Bandau has already served 266 days of his sentence and could have another third off for good behaviour.
Bandau, who was 17 at the time of the offence last year, denied attempting to smuggle $3.6 million worth of ecstasy pills with two friends. They claimed they were tricked by a friend into believing they were only carrying antiques.
His lawyers and senior members of his Chassidic community are hoping to have him extradited to Israel to serve the remaining two-and-a-half years of his sentence. But Japanese law does not currently allow for extradition to Israel.
