Derby day in Manchester had an extra bit of spice, when South Manchester 2nd team took on Manchester Maccabi.
In what is usually a tight fixture, South ran away as deserved winners and continued their climb up the table. Two goals from Ethan Krell and one from Harry Nelson gave Marc Magid's men all three points.
Marc is no stranger to Maccabi, having played for the yellow half of Manchester for years. However, his black and blue side came out in full force and nobody was more delighted than the gaffer the secure the three points.
"We are going from strength to strength, finding the right balance between youth and experience. We are playing with a smile and that's the ethos of this great club. We will look to build on this next week against the old enemy again."
The 1st team defeated Saints 6-3, although the final result should have been a cricket score as opposed to a tennis score. Louis Rawlings continued his impressive run by scoring twice, as did talisman Adam Lavin with two strikers goals. Sam Cantor scored within two minutes of walking on the field, and Ben Peppi scored a superb free kick, dipping over the keeper into the top corner.
Saints offered a threat going forward and fought hard in the middle of the park. The goal of the game and quite possibly the season came at 4-1, when from kick off, a pass, a flick and half-volley from 53 yards looped over everyone and into the South net.
South manager Neil Collins said: "I was very disappointed by Mark Stewart’s ‘injury’ early in the second half. I knew he wanted to get away early to get to the Manchester derby, but I didn’t think he would pull up lame just so he could get changed quicker. It’s not what I expect from my players.
"I’ve talked to Mark, as has the Board, and reminded him of his responsibilities as ex-vice-captain of this great football club and he unreservedly apologised on his Facebook fan page.
"Otherwise it’s been a great week for us, we won again and we feel the club is on an upward trajectory, our social media numbers are higher than our rivals the other side of the city and our recent BOGOF ticket offer for the handicup has been gobbled up by our fans."
