The great and the good from the worlds of fashion and beauty gathered in Sigmund Freud’s garden for a sun-drenched kiddush – with their four-legged friends.
While human guests feasted on heart-shaped challahs, pistachio rugelach and Yiddisher classics, including smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels and fishballs and chrain, beneath the shade of Sigmund Freud’s beloved almond tree, their four-legged friends played with bespoke blue “matzo balls”.
The “Pet Kiddush” was the brain-child of fashion consultant Mandi Lennard and designer Deborah Lyons, who organised it on behalf of Fashion & Beauty Against Antisemitism (FABAA). It was hosted with support with from fashion journalist Benji Park in memory of his late grandmother.

Blessings were led by trained cantor and Yiddish blues singer Pini Brown, while harpist and composer Noa Davies played an eclectic medley of songs, ranging from Sunrise Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof to Minnie Riperton’s Lovin’ You.

Welcoming guests, Lennard said: “Freud arrived in London in 1938 as a refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria. The family had always been dog lovers, bringing their chow chow, Lun, with them when they left Vienna. His favourite dog was a chow called Jofi, who used to join him in his consultations with patients, and Freud admitted he often depended upon Jofi for an assessment of his patients' mental state.”

Speaking after the event, Lyons, who founded FABAA and was there with her dog Olive and mother Miriam, added: “Our connection to animals and the earth is more vital than ever; they ground us, comfort us and offer strength in ways words often can’t. It felt incredibly special to honour that bond and come together in such a meaningful and joyful way.”
It was a sentiment echoed by Lisa Armstrong OBE, Fashion Director of The Telegraph, who gave a speech prior to Kiddush extolling the spiritual energy of dogs and the synergy with Shabbat.

Fashion & Beauty Against Antisemitism was founded in the wake of October 7 to help foster understanding across minority communities in our industry. Their first event they organised was a Fashion Kiddush at Western Marble Arch shul with 100 fashion guests joining the regular congregation. In February, they hosted a Shabbat dinner in New York to mark fashion week in collaboration with The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), featuring a glittering guest list of fashion big-hitters, including Zac Posen, Andre Walker, Michael Halpern, Rebecca Hessel Cohen and Nicky Campbell.
