Memories are made for Leicester as £1m project nears completion

Orthodox congregation is seeking memorabilia for display in heritage showcase

As Leicester Hebrew Congregation’s £1 million-plus building project nears completion, the shul is seeking memorabilia from those with a past family involvement.

The Lottery-funded scheme, Sharing Jewish Heritage in Leicester, will enable the Grade II-listed synagogue to showcase a rich history dating back to 1897.

It will feature those from the community who have contributed significantly to local civic and professional life. The shul is also seeking photos of weddings or synagogue events for wall display.

Rebbetzen Rivkie Pink said building work was nearly completed. The shul wanted to show the growing number of visitors how “Judaism’s ancient laws and traditions are still relevant”.

The shul has around 85 member families, accounting for 200 people, and regularly involves university students in its activities. It has raised some £200,000 towards the project.

Memorabilia should be sent to rabbipink@btinternet.com
