The first Chief Rabbi’s Award has been presented to Professor David Katz, one of UK Jewry’s most tireless advocates on medical issues including organ donation, circumcision and genetic screening.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis praised the recipient as “one of those very special people whose service to the Jewish community knows no bounds.
“Almost all of his work is done behind the scenes and without any fanfare or recognition.
“My hope is that we will recognise many more unsung heroes in this way in the years to come.”
The framed award, designed by artist Yolanda Rosalki, was presented at Kinloss, Finchley Synagogue, during the Chief Rabbi’s annual pre-Yomtov conference for 150 Jewish religious leaders, where guidance was offered on key messages for the New Year and beyond.
Guests included Gavin Williamson, who in his first speech as Education Secretary, praised the Chief Rabbi for advocating tolerance towards LGBT pupils.
He also gave a strong commitment to countering antisemitism within schools and colleges.
“It is vital, and a key part of my job, that I do everything to stamp out antisemitism in every educational institution in this country. There is no space ever for antisemitism.”
