Masorti Judaism is to take on responsibility for the Louis Jacobs Foundation, the charitable initiative set up to preserve the legacy of the rabbi who was the movement’s spiritual mentor.
The foundation was launched by Rabbi Jacobs’s son Ivor following the death of his father 20 years ago as a resource to ensure the continuing accessibility of his teachings.
It houses a digital archive not only of his many books but also articles, writings and video talks of “one of the most influential Jewish thinkers of the modern era”, Masorti said.
It also contains sources on the controversy that propelled him to national fame 60 years ago when his ideas on the origins of Torah led to his exile from the United Synagogue.
The movement has already been collaborating with the foundation in several ventures including the weekly JewishQuest Podcast, an annual memorial lecture for Rabbi Jacobs and Kol Rina, a siddur for Shabbat, a draft version of which was published last year.
“By bringing the foundation into the Masorti family, the movement aims to ensure that Rabbi Jacobs’s ideas continue to inform contemporary Jewish life, education, and scholarship,” Masorti said.
It will pave the way for new educational resources inspired by Rabbi Jacobs’s teachings and expanded programming across the movement.

Joe Carlebach, chair of Masorti, said: We are looking forward to building on the many successes of LJF enhancing the breadth and depth of the Masorti offering in the UK. The move is a fitting tribute to Rabbi
Louis Jacobs, who inspired Masorti Judaism in the UK, and secures his legacy for the next generation.”
Ivor Jacobs said: “We are proud to entrust this legacy to Masorti Judaism UK, and above all to Rabbi Zagoria-Moffet [Masorti’s director of strategy], whose intellectual leadership and vision carry forward the spirit of openness and questing that defined my father’s approach. I am confident that under his guidance, this legacy will continue to grow, inspire, and reach new generations.”
Masorti said it was “deeply grateful for Ivor’s tireless commitment over the past 20 years and looks forward to continuing to work closely with him as this legacy moves into its next chapter”.
