Kingston, Surbiton and District Synagogue members have voted overwhelmingly to switch from affiliate to full member status of the United Syngogue.

The south London community is in its 60th year and has more than 330 members.

Sheila Mann, the shul chair, said that following cordial discussions with the US, the feeling was that the time was right to become a full US member. “We look forward to all the benefits this will bring to our community.”

The Kingston vote will be ratified at the next US council meeting.

David Kaplan, US director of community services, looked forward “to working with the flourishing community, under the guidance of Rabbi Samuel Landau, and its excellent team of honorary officers”.

Kingston’s move follows the recent decision of the Ruislip community to switch to full status, which was ratified by the US last week. It leaves seven affiliated congregations — Catford and Bromley, Chelsea, Hemel Hempstead, Peterborough, Romford, Staines and Welwyn Garden City.
