Under a brilliant spring sun, five Jewish schools gathered at JFS for the first-ever Jewish Interschool Cup.
With ten teams competing, two each from Hasmonean, JFS, Yavneh, Immanuel and JCoSS, each arrived with a strong desire to win.
Despite the competitive atmosphere on the pitch, the cup was more than just a few football matches. It provided an opportunity for Jewish teenagers to relax, connect and share the joy of sport together, on a beautiful, warm afternoon.
Hundreds of Jewish teenagers attended the event, and the sport, the camaraderie, and the weather all contributed to bringing smiles to many faces.
Yoav Oshman, JFS’s head boy and one of the organisers, alongside the wider head boy and head girl team, explained his motivation for organising the tournament. “Football has a way of generating strong energy and friendly competition," he said. “The cup is the perfect way to create a stronger sense of community. We need to remember that we’re a united front. We have each other.”
Remarking on the sight of many jubilant players and supporters, Yoav said: “Seeing hundreds of Jewish students together was very powerful. It was emotional to see the positive impact sport has on so many teenagers.”
The competition was organised collaboratively by student leadership teams from all participating schools.
The event also raised money for the charity JTeen, a support helpline for Jewish teenagers facing emotional challenges. Donations to the charity totalled over £500. “We picked JTeen because we recognised the close link between sport and mental health,” said Yoav.
In the ten-team league format, each side played three matches, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals. Both JCoSS teams and one team from both Immanuel and JFS progressed.
The hosts faced the JCoSS A team in a ten-minute final, with a last-minute goal securing a 2-1 victory, ensuring JFS emerged victorious on their home turf.
Yoav recalled the ecstatic full-time scenes as JFS supporters rushed onto the pitch to celebrate. “It was extremely exciting to be the first team to ever win this tournament.”
Following the success of the event, the schools’ respective student leadership teams plan to continue collaborating to organise future competitions. Basketball and netball are two other sports where competitions are being considered, as well as a proposed football match at a different school.
