New 'Torah Action Life' Jewish community centre to open in Temple Fortune

Centre to offer 'a whole array of innovative ideas that the community hasn’t yet seen'

A Jewish organisation aimed at young professionals and Jewish youth has purchased a site in Temple Fortune, with plans to turn the building into “a beacon for the community.”

TAL — Torah Action Life — founded nine years ago by Rabbi Jonathan Tawil, has bought the site of the former Delisserie restaurant, which closed last year.

Speaking to the JC, Rabbi Tawil said the plan was for the organisation’s community centre to open “within a year” and that it would offer “different types of events, everything from cooking to ulpan to shiurim, bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah programmes and a place for students to come and do their work”, as well as “a whole array of innovative ideas that the community hasn’t yet seen.”

Last week, he said, TAL had seen “its 49th engagement” between participants.

“We’ve set up a network where we are with a student throughout their whole journey — now we’re well established with young professionals, we’ve set up a young married couples programme and we have set up a children’s programme.”

Rabbi Tawil said he hoped the new centre will be “somewhere where the youth will feel the pride of their heritage, as well as a social network, to get people involved from all different ages in all aspects of Jewish life.”
