The wife of a Jewish war veteran was given a surprise gift at her 101st birthday tea, when she received her late husband’s war medals.
Martha Abraham, who lives in a Jewish Blind and Disabled (JBD) residence, was presented with medals honouring the service of Stanley Diamondstone, a radio operator in the RAF during the Second World War, during last week’s celebration.
They were reclaimed through the Claim Your Medals campaign – run by AJEX, the Jewish Military Association – which helps Jewish veterans and their families to identify, reclaim or replace medals from war or other military service. It is believed that Stanley’s medals were either lost or never received in the first place.
Martha said that she was “absolutely grateful and elated” to receive the medals, 81 years after the war ended, as it would ensure her husband’s legacy would live on and his service would be proudly remembered.

She said: “It made my day to receive the medals as such a wonderful surprise. To be with all these wonderful friends and to receive all their gifts and best wishes was wonderful too.”
Martha and Stanley first met in an air raid shelter in 1942. On their way out, Stanley told Martha that he was going to marry her.
She was given four medals belonging to Stanley: the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the War Medal 1939-45.
These medals were discovered thanks to Stan Kaye – an AJEX member and fellow tenant at JBD, who hosted the tea party – after he learnt in conversation with Martha that Stanley had never collected his medals.

Mike Bluestone, the honorary president of AJEX, who presented the medals, said: “It was a fabulous and uplifting experience to present Martha with her late husband’s war medals. The atmosphere during the presentation in the room was phenomenal”.
Craig Watson, an Air Commodore in the RAF, presented the medals to Martha with Bluestone. The pair also presented another resident with his father’s medals from the Second World War.
Four generations of the family were present, including Martha’s great-great-nephew, as well as other relatives, friends, JBD residents, and police community officers.
Also present were Air Commodore Alan Opie CBE and the current mayor of Brent, Cllr Ryan Hack.
AJEX’s Claim Your Medals campaign, led by its emeritus chair Dan Fox, has, to date, identified more than 351 medals across 132 families.
A spokesperson for AJEX said: “The project helps to ensure that the Jewish community’s service and sacrifice is remembered, recognised, and worn proudly by future generations.”
