Fashion: Denim is cool again — if it comes in the lightest blue

Yet, with the darker hues fading into fashion obscurity, this spring’s denim has been pushed to new limits with super-light shades, distressed finishes and (alarmingly) a whole lot of ripping. It is not just jeans that have lightened up — the denim jacket has made a comeback in the palest of shades, while light denim jumpsuits, skirts and dresses give the cult fabric a girly twist.

For those who swore off-pale denim years ago (including me), this is the time to make amends and embrace all things pale. Take note, these shades were all over the spring runways. At Chanel, models paraded in everything from bikinis to one-pieces in soft-light denim, while at Christopher Kane we were captivated by pre-washed frayed jackets and stone-washed ra-ra skirts.

So, how do you wear it? The current incarnation of the jean is simply pale and comes in a multitude of shapes. Super-skinny and ripped led the way at Christopher Kane, Cavalli’s were flared and high-waisted and Dolce and Gabbana’s denims were bizarrely patchwork — anything but mundane! Thankfully, these styles have made it on to the high street. Fashion frontrunner Topshop gets prime position with its slashed skinnies, but beware, they do require confidence. Wear them with a loose top and killer heels for that laid-back summer vibe.
