Built by over 10,000 Turkish soldiers directed by German engineer Heinrich Meissner, the railway was originally conceived as a means to transport Muslim pilgrims from Istanbul to Medina in Saudi Arabia. The line was completed in 1908 but was severely damaged during the First World War. Only small sections of the route are still in operation with vast sections left abandoned.
