There may have been a global crisis last year but that didn’t stop New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg giving $254m of his fortune to charity.

Bloomberg ranked him fourth in The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s list of who gave the most to charitable causes in 2009. According to the publication, total giving by the top 50 philanthropists plunged almost 75 per cent, to $4.1 billion from $15.5 billion. But Bloomberg upped his giving from $235m in 2008, and $205m in 2007.
