On December 19th two incendiary young groups combine to pack a powerful punch of Big Band and Jewish music in a dynamic double-header.
The JMI Youth Big Band, led by Musical Director Sam Eastmond (John Zorn/Spike Orchestra), is Jewish music for the next generation, returning to JW3 for a concert celebrating their fifth year, and their fourth recording and 2nd full album release "Bet – We Are Here."
This album is a celebration of the creativity of a British Jewish identity and was created from a week long workshop in June 2021, where an intense session proved more fruitful than a banquet in the sukkah. An album was recorded, mixed and the results were astounding. There on disk was the captured a snapshot of Jewish musical creativity from our young. The excellence and passion put into the recording by the young musicians is something that all community can be proud of!
In the 5 years since they have been together the band have release 2 albums and 2 singles, and performed in front of capacity crowds at venues and festivals all over London. The band regularly feature a number of internationally renowned guest musicians both live and on recordings, including; Jon Madof, Sam Day Harmet, Josephine Davies, Andy Watts, Mike Wilkins and Moss Freed such is the respect that these young musicians command!
The JMI Youth Big Band is delighted to be sharing the bill with NYJO - National Youth Jazz Orchestra Academy Big Band – an ensemble of highly talented young musicians who come together to learn, play and celebrate the music of Jazz giants such as Ellington, Basie, Maria Schneider, Stan Tracey and many more.
"It is fantastic to continue our collaboration with the JMI Big Band. The last gig at Pizza Express in Dean Street had such positive energy and some inspirational playing by all the musicians. Hearing such a wide variety of repertoire by two great bands with their own personalities but united by a love for jazz showed how the art-form links together communities across London. I'm really looking forward to the gig on the 19th December and I know the NYJO musicians are
too." MARK ARMSTRONG – ARTISTIC AND MUSIC DIRECTOR NYJO.
The JMI Youth Big Band is, by its nature a band of transitions, as musicians join us on their musical journey aged 11 and then leave aged 18 ready to play and preform as adults. We have several of these 18 year old musicians returning for this album launch before they step out to become tomorrow's masters.
