Tikkun Olam Ted by Vivian Newman, illustrated by Steve Mack in bold colours and friendly, rounded shapes, is a popular Kar-Ben board book now being sent out by PJ Library. It subtly teaches the days of the week and the concept of resting on Shabbat, while depicting ways small children can help the natural world, such as recycling used objects into art. A grinning cat joins in Ted’s activities. Age from birth.

Simple eco-tips for small people are also the theme of Bruno’s Green Adventures by Nina Bassalian (Nina Bassalian Print). Even the youngest can be empowered to help the world by, for instance, turning off the tap while brushing teeth. Carly Selby’s jolly illustrations show diverse groups of kids enjoying eco activities. Age three up.

Maya & Marley and the New Friend by Laura Henry-Allain, illustrated by Yabaewah Scott (Penguin) also has an eco-friendly feel, as the titular children welcome Kazuki to the community garden. Maya and Marley’s hearty hello is too much for quiet-loving Kazuki, but they learn to support the newbie in a quieter, inclusive way. Non-preachy but with good teaching points. Age three up.
