If you are looking for a special Rosh Hashanah gift, Mendy Ida, of Central Kosher in Belgravia, recommends a hamper, filled with fine kosher food such as foie gras and Camembert, specialist hechshered condiments such as A1 Steak Sauce, wasabi sauce and balsamic vinegar, along with award-winning kosher wines. Rosh Hashanah delicacies at the store will include high-end speciality jars of honey and honeycomb.
Simply order from Central Kosher and “send beautiful High Holy Day gestures and gifts of friendship,” says the shopkeeper, who has more than a decade of experience in kosher hospitality. With a gift of a hamper, “People are able to engage with each other and strengthen their social Jewish ties in the lead-up to Jewish festivals.”
Central Kosher includes a fresh bakery section, with a wide variety of challah, including sweet for Rosh Hashanah, as well as sourdough and gluten-free options.
The shop also sells an enormous selection of hard-to-find fresh and frozen kosher goods, including veal, gourmet sausages and jerky, as well as cupboard staples (cereal, pasta etc) and frozen items like pizza and ice cream. You can also pop by for a ready-made artisanal sandwich.
For those staying in one of the many local hotels and wanting kosher meals, it operates a catering service. The store will also deliver to your holiday home – they even had a client who was renting the former estate of Winston Churchill.
There is a daily minyan at Chabad Belgravia, where Central Kosher is located, and on Monday this is followed by a special breakfast with a guest chef, along with a Torah class.
Central Kosher is also a handy resource for the Judaica needs of the local Jewish community, including items such as yahrzeit candles before festivals, and one can even get a set of lulav and etrog here for Succot.
The shop is open on Sunday during and after the on-site cheder, so families can pick up kosher nosh such as Haribo, Bamba, chocolate and biscuits, without having to journey to north west London.
“What the kosher shop has done is that it’s raised the profile of Jewish identity, pride and engagement,” says Rabbi Mendel Kalmenson, “and it has provided a much-needed piece of Jewish infrastructure in central London, making living a kosher lifestyle much more feasible and accessible”. Because of Central Kosher, he says, “countless people are incorporating kosher into their lives in a more regular and meaningful way.
“Additionally Central Kosher has become an entry point to many unaffiliated Jews who now have a local resource and offering that serves as a point of Jewish connection and we have found that the general level of kashrut has grown exponentially.”
