The step from university to the world of work can feel difficult for many – especially in this time of economic uncertainty and fierce competition for graduate roles.
Work Avenue, a leading employment and business support organisation for the community, is here to help.
Its experts support students and graduates, of all ages and backgrounds, with the advice, CV creation, interview preparation, confidence building, networking opportunities and in-work support to achieve genuine career success.
If you, or a family member, are making the transition from university to the workplace, here are ten top tips to get you started.
1. Think carefully about which path is right for you
Spend time exploring your passions, values and personal strengths before starting your job search. Online career planners or a vocational quiz can provide much-needed direction and increased confidence as you decide on your next steps.
2. Take note of growing industries
While graduate jobs – those specific entry-level positions created for university leavers – are at record lows, certain sectors are expanding rapidly and creating fresh opportunities. Keep an open mind and take a look at current growth industries such as tech, AI, cyber, sustainable energy, data science and e-commerce.
3. Match your CV/application form to the role
Avoid the temptation to send a generic CV to every employer. Instead make sure to carefully read the job description and person specification, aligning your CV or application form with these requirements. Make sure what the employer wants is visibly reflected on what you send them; as this is exactly how employers shortlist candidates.
4. Make your cover letter work hard
A compelling cover letter can get you noticed. Keep it under one page and use it to support and flesh out specific aspects of your experience in relation to the role. Don’t just repeat your CV, but instead reinforce exactly why you are a strong match for the role.
5. Build your LinkedIn presence
LinkedIn is becoming a vital tool. Treat it as a virtual CV and use it to build a professional identity online. Ensure your profile is fully completed – including a professional photo, strong headline and your specific skills – so that recruiters and employers can locate you easily. Use the 'Open to work' section to clearly signal your career interests. Visit theworkavenue.org.uk/event for our next free LinkedIn for Employment workshop.
6. Get networking
Networking opens doors to unexpected opportunities – remember, it is not just who you know, it is who they know. Proactively connect with friends, family, peers and professionals at university careers fairs or company open days. When reaching out on LinkedIn, always add a personalised note.
7. Gain work experience wherever possible
With so much competition for places in many industries, relevant hands-on experience is more important than ever. Look for internships, paid work experience and, if you are in a position to, unpaid or volunteering roles in your chosen field. Even a day or two of work shadowing gives you a valuable insight into what a role involves, building confidence and strengthening your future applications.
8. Use AI carefully and appropriately
While a tool such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini can be an excellent resource for helping write your CV, cover letter or prepare for interviews, it should only be used as a guide. AI content lacks authenticity and employers/recruiters will recognise its writing style. Keep your applications personalised, authentic and strictly reflective of your own voice.
9. Prepare thoroughly for interviews and assessment centres
Research the company's achievements and broader sector current affairs. Review the person specification and write down concrete examples of when you have demonstrated each required skill. If you are invited to an assessment centre – whether in person or virtual – be ready for exercises like case studies or group tasks. Show you can collaborate effectively, and always have one or two relevant questions prepared.
