Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Families today are looking for more than academic success alone; they want an education that prepares young people to thrive in a rapidly changing world while nurturing confidence, character and a sense of purpose.
At Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools Foundation that philosophy sits at the heart of everything they do. Set across a 100-acre Hertfordshire campus, Habs Boys and Habs Girls provide an exceptional education for students aged four to 18, combining the strengths of single-sex learning with the benefits of a co-educational environment. The result is an ambitious and forward-thinking school community where students are encouraged not only to achieve highly, but also to make a meaningful impact in the world.
That commitment was recognised nationally in 2025 when Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools were overall winner of Independent School Parent magazine’s Independent School of the Year awards, also receiving the accolade for outstanding educational partnerships.
The recognition reflected not only academic excellence, but also the schools’ broader vision for education and commitment to creating opportunities beyond their own campus.
The judging panel praised Habs for remaining true to its values while continuing to evolve and innovate, describing the schools as representing “the very best qualities of the independent sector”. So what qualities should we look for, when making that important school decision?

Independent thinking
This year, Habs remains focused on preparing students for futures not yet imagined, through a curriculum that encourages independence, resilience and curiosity. To help realise this vision, the school appointed a director of innovation in 2024, further strengthening its commitment to forward-thinking education. Through the Habs Innovation Centre, students are encouraged to engage with emerging ideas and real-world challenges, from artificial intelligence and sustainability to entrepreneurship and digital innovation.
Pastoral care
Academic achievement remains a hallmark of a Habs education, but the schools are equally committed to developing well-rounded young people. A strong pastoral care programme supports students’ emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing, ensuring they feel supported and confident throughout their educational journey.
Co-curricular strengths
Outside the classroom, there is something for everyone at Habs. Whether it is sport, music, drama or debating, the co-curricular offering allows students to discover and enjoy new passions. Societies are a huge part of sixth-form life, and students are encouraged not only to join but also to lead or even create their own.
Deeper values
Jewish Society, in particular, is a meaningful part of the Habs community, bringing people together through speakers, celebrations and shared prayer, and creating a strong sense of connection across year groups while celebrating Jewish life within the school.
Inclusivity and kindness are central to school culture. Students are encouraged to value different perspectives and contribute positively to a welcoming community where every individual feels recognised and respected.
What particularly distinguishes Habs is the clarity of its purpose. Through its “Profound Impact” strategy, the schools aim to empower young people to contribute meaningfully to society and engage thoughtfully with the world around them. This philosophy extends far beyond the school gates through an ambitious and award-winning partnerships programme.
Working with six local state schools, Habs delivers more than 52 hours of curriculum support and enrichment activities every week, reaching almost 2,000 students. More than 500 Habs pupils and 56 staff members are actively involved in the programme, which is designed to create educational opportunities for communities facing disadvantage.
Importantly, these partnerships benefit everyone involved. Habs students develop leadership, empathy and collaboration skills through working alongside younger pupils and local communities, while partner schools gain access to resources, expertise and opportunities that broaden educational outcomes.
The schools’ wider outreach initiatives also continue to expand. Collaborations with organisations across the arts, sport and education sectors provide students with real-world experiences and fresh perspectives, helping them develop confidence and adaptability. Meanwhile, The Habs Foundation strengthens lifelong connections between alumni, parents and students, creating valuable mentoring and networking opportunities that extend far beyond school life.
Inspiring premises
Alongside educational innovation, the campus itself continues to evolve. Ongoing investment in facilities ensures students benefit from an outstanding learning environment that supports both academic and personal growth. Recent developments include enhanced sixth-form spaces, refurbishment projects across key buildings and sustainability initiatives designed to create a more environmentally responsible campus for future generations.
In 2026, Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools continue to exemplify what modern independent education can achieve, nurturing young people who are not only academically accomplished, but prepared to lead in an increasingly complex world.
