As any football fan will tell you, we are very passionate about the love and support we have for our team, be it the Premier League, the FA Cup, and most recently, the Carling Cup. We stand by them through thick and thin.
That said, let me tell you there is nothing and I mean nothing more stressful then being a Spurs fan right now. Last night for 118 minutes of our thrilling Carling Cup semi-final tie with Championship side Burnley, I couldn’t believe what I was watching.
It’s not like we had a tough job on our hands. It was a 4-1 lead from the first leg at White Hart Lane. We could have just sat back and defended or just been professional and played like the Premier League team we apparently are.
No, not the mighty Spurs. Oh no, we have to do things the hard way. Whilst sitting there watching the drama unfold as Burnley took the game to extra time, I flashed back to when I was at Wembley less then a year ago holding my 11-year-old brother up on his seat as Dimitar Berbatov crucially scored the penalty to level the game against Chelsea last year.
The same brother was sitting next to me last night, but this time with tears flowing down his face. I could see the passion in his eyes, he was desperate to return to Wembley and so was I. As the reassuring older brother, I put my arm around him, dried his tears and whispered in his ear, saying: “Don’t worry Ben, Harry will sort it.”
And with that, two minutes later the most overrated striker I have ever seen - Roman Pavlyuchenko - rifled home into the bottom corner to send us through. My brother jumped and screamed “yes” I guess all’s well that ends well.
I also had a chuckle listening to Harry Redknapp’s post-match interview. I couldn’t believe his sheer honestly and just how amusing he was. Here’s an example. “I hope Sir Alex isn’t listening and I am sorry to the supporters because that FA Cup match with United on Saturday is so secondary to me now. I am going to send up the biggest mish-mash team.” Brilliant.
So there you have it. Another Spurs performance that will live long in the memory. We may have put on one of the most awful performances I have ever witnessed as a Spurs fan but one thing is for sure – ‘we’re the famous Tottenham Hotspur and we’re going to Wembley, Wembley, Wembley’
