I wrote last week that the appointment of Baroness Neuberger as senior rabbi of West London Synagogue would give the Progressive movement "a louder voice on the national stage" and that she "may even give the Chief Rabbi a run for his money".
The potential impact of her return to the pulpit has not been lost on the United Synagaogue. In his latest blog, entitled "Who will be the new voice for British Jews?", Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet of Mill Hill Synagogue writes: "Baroness Neuberger is a formidable woman but her views do not reflect those of traditional Judaism which almost 70 per cent of Anglo-Jewry still subscribes to in one form or another. If she was to become the de facto voice of British Jews, there would be greater schism in an increasingly declining community. Of course she could only really rise to prominence when Lord Sacks steps down. Perhaps he ought to now consider staying on a little longer."
