Shortly before the Knesset began the second reading of the National Housing Bill on Monday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu described his socioeconomic vision for Israel.

Netanyahu participated in a Knesset tribute to Zionist leader and Likud inspiration Zeev Jabotinsky, referring to the five basic needs every government must provide to its citizens according to Jabotinsky's philosophy: A home, food, medicine, education and clothing.

"At the same time, he said the economy must be free," the prime minister explained, quoting Jabotinsky: "The state should stop poverty, but cannot limit success and the pursuit of happiness."

Netanyahu continued: "It is important to define a competitive market. An open economy should not reach a point where there is no more competition because of monopolies and cartels – in that situation the government must encourage competition."
